Welcome to The Sugars!
My name is Libby Russell. I was born and raised in Southern Maine, and now reside in a cozy lil’ abode in Brooklyn, New York.
During the day, I am a senior copywriter at a digital agency. During the night, I am an avid wine drinker and sleeper. During the all of the time, I have type 1 diabetes, and have had it for the last 13+ years.
Being a diabetic is tough, man. We face stigmas galore, our bodies are constantly pulling fast one’s on us, the US healthcare system is a darn right mess, and the strain of managing an otherwise involuntarily functioning organ manually, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year is quite a lot to manage for one wee lil’ person.
Over the years, I’ve been challenged by the anxiety and exhaustion that can go hand-in-hand with this stupid disease. I created The Sugars to combat those yucky feelings after a very confusing and lonely 4 years of college. It is here to be a safe space, an honesty platform, an uplifting light, a laugh factory, and a comforting love for anyone on the hunt for a digital hug.
I like dogs. All of them. I have a very crooked nose. I need to be on the move: constantly. And I am a very chatty Leo.
But enough about me, this place is for you because time after time, funk after funk, the people that strengthen me the most are those in my t1 tribe. I can only hope that I can at least attempt do the same for you in return.
I’m glad to meet you, and I’m glad you found me. I hope to never cause alarms or stir up fear for you, I hope to make you laugh, both at yourself and with yourself, and I hope you learn about other people out in the wild with type 1 diabetes who are absolutely crushing life, one prick at a time.
